CHAPTER TEN

ORVILLE MCINTYRE

Remarkably perky for a creature made of plastic, isnt he? said Gabby. They watched as Scamp padded about Gabbys bedroom, sniffing curiously at everything, his hollow tail wagging with pleasure and glinting in the morning sunlight streaming in through the window.

Barney blinked in astonishment. Wow.

Thats not all, said Gabby. Listen.

Barney listened. He heard nothing. What?

Sssh! hissed Gabby, pressing a finger to her lips.

Status undetermined, said a voice.

What was that? said Barney.

Scamp, said Gabby. Every couple of minutes he says status undetermined.

Why?

Havent the foggiest!

How come his heads still got leaves all over it? said Barney. Doesnt that make it a bit hard to see where hes going? He sipped his tea, thankful that the mug was one of Gabbys own and not plastered with leaves.

Apparently not, said Gabby. Look at him. He seems to get about all right. Its . . . well

A little bit impossible? suggested Barney.

You said it, Vice-pres. But at least we know what brought the paper plane to life. Its this blue squidgy stuff Lewis is storing in his chocolate wrappers. I know I said it might be dangerous, but I couldnt help myself having a poke about in it yesterday after you left.

Barney grinned. Couldnt resist it, eh?

That stuff is seriously weird. Imagine if it had splashed everywhere! The whole house might be alive!

Scamp trotted up to Barney, panting lightly. Barney went to pat him.

Status undetermined, said Scamp.

Dont, said Gabby. Hes really cold. It hurts to touch him for long. I dont know why.

Ah, of course, said Barney.

What do you mean, of course?

Confession time, said Barney. He reached into his coat and drew out his pencil case from an inside pocket. Gabby looked at him quizzically. He unzipped the pencil case and took out a pencil. He placed it on the bed next to Gabby, who was sitting beside him. Say hello, said Barney to the pencil.

The pencil twitched into life. It sat up, bending in the middle in its impossible way, tip pointing upwards. Gabby gasped. Good morning, it said. Does sir or madam have a task they require carrying out?

It . . . it!

Talks? said Barney nonchalantly. Oh, yeah. He talks properly. Seems to bend like rubber, too, even though hes wood. No idea how he does that. He draws, of course. Anything I want.

No, said Gabby. I thought Scamp was going to totally freak you out this morning. But then you introduce me to a talking pencil. Ha, Im glad I let you join Geek Inc., Barney. Youre weirder than I am.

Excuse me, said the pencil. Will I be needed?

Whoops, said Barney. He seems to get a bit tetchy if he feels youre wasting his time. He picked up the pencil and placed it back in his pencil case. No drawing required just at the moment, thank you. He closed the cases zip.

Crazy, said Gabby. She flopped back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling. Crazy, crazy craziness. I love it!
